SituationPackaging – the bottle and label – is a major component of wine branding. To a large extent it defines the product – consumers actually do judge a wine by its label, at least for the initial purchase. The Prairie Moon label needed to visually stand out and differentiate the brand from others on the self. It had to set a mood and expectations. And it needed to convey important information to the retailer and the consumer.
Proprietary watercolor paintings capture the “prairie” and “moon” to reinforce the winery name and form the centerpiece of each label. No two wine varieties carry the same painting and the paintings are retired after each season’s production. Each season’s bottles therefore become collectors’ item and retailers can easily identify the vintage. In addition, the use of background colors and the color of highlighted letters in the name all have special meanings.
Prairie Moon wines and the winery have become readily identifiable and popular and command a premium price.
